We stand on the shoulders of others. Long before I had the courage to write, neighbor, author, and teacher John Oliver Killens was out there helping artist. In this photo we are at the Fulton Art Fair held in Styvesant Park, Brooklyn, New York. The annual event was held at a time when there was no other places to exhibit our Art. Like many other events it has become a part of a larger project held at Restorations, a Brooklyn Art Center. I am proud to have been a member of the committee responsible for our events in the fifties, years before the great Human Rights Struggle in America. We gain and we lose.
The Fulton Art Fair committe can brag of such persons as Ernie Critchlow, Leo and Delores Carty, Chairperson; Jacob Lawrence, Romar Bearden, Vincent D. Smith, and many others whom have gone on to greater things. The loss is that we cannot garner the intelluctual powers we once took for granted in our communities. But while we were there we left our mark. There are doctors, lawyers in the old community that didn't know that Art, Our Art existed. We have been told by many young people that the Fulton Art Fair changed their lives. The good news is many of them have returned to give back to their old community.
In the photo left to right: Author Cliff Chandler, Artist Delores Carty, John Oliver killens, and his wife Grace Killens. I am proud to have known John. We attended the same high school in Macon, Georgia, and lived in the same neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. Addendum: The Fulton Art Fair has returned to Styvesant Park.

Karsh of Ottawa was one of my favorite photographers. This portrait is the result of an experiment to find Karsh's lighting ratio. In this experiment I went beyond Karsh's range and discovered  my own ratio. By the way, Karsh's ratio was 2-1. His real talent was to capture the essence of his subjects.
We had a lot in common.

I read Berenice Abbot's book, loved her pictures and set out with my cameras to make a difference. I am happy to say I was successful,as far as the people in the communities were concerned, no one had ever notice them before. Brooklyn, NY 1960 on Prospect Place.

Cliff Chandler is best known for his photographs of Duke Ellington. In 1982 at the Ledel Gallery in SoHo his photographs taken of Duke Ellington in a recording session in 1968 was a major part of a very successful exhibit, and his street photography that was titled "Social Contrast in the Black Community," were a major part of the show. Those are beautiful pictures of black people in New York and, more than that, very strong statements about the social conditions of urban blacks in this country. The more striking quality in Chandler's images is that those people are individuals, not just tokens of a situation. The picture of a man loitering somewhere is not any man, but a portrait of that particular one. As he gets so near his subjects, so do we. And, as Chandler sees them with tenderness and respect, we too see them much better than through our own eyes. At a time when social issues are so full of hatred, it takes a great man to make his statements with love--and a great photographer to say it so beautifully and, in the same instance, so much to the point.

We live and learn. I didn't realize that these two young boys were posing for me until I posted This photograph. They lived in the neighborhood and had observed me taking pictures. The truck in which they selected sends a powerful message. I hope they made it to the cooperate World.
