Book signings are fun. Imagine sitting at the entrance of one of our nation's largest bookstore chains and having people stop to ask you,"What is you book about?" Earlier in my career as a published author with my first book, I would spend five minutes describing what my book is about. Imagine that. After a year on the road and many signings I have diminished my description of what my books are about. There are two reasons, one is that ninety percent of the time the person asking the question never buys the book, the other reason is it takes too much time. I have narrowed my description to six words. I won't tell you what they are now you will have to come to my book signing when I reach your city.
I love book signings. You meet so many wonderful people. I have been asked to speak to book clubs, serve as a panelist on the writing process, conduct a monthly writers workshop, appear on television, interviewed on radio, and lectured at schools. I didn't imagine it was going to be so much fun. My only complaint is that traveling prevents me from writing. Success, yes, made money, no. You have to sell a lot of books to make money. What that leaves us with is what we love to do. We love the process. We need and want money like everyone else, but there isn't anything that replaces writing.

The rarest of moments is the picture taken by By Baritone Saxophonist Harry Carney while I was on a three day photo shoot of Duke Ellington. Left to right: Russel Procope, Duke Ellington, and Cliff Chandler. Duke didn't like for people to sneak into photos with him, but Harry Carney, who was closest to Duke did it anyway. We caught hell, but it was worth it. Later Duke looked at us and waved his hand as if to say, what am I going to do with you two...
